A Bit of Background

Ikusasa Decolonisation Libraries at a Glance

1.Who Are We?

Ikusasa decolonisation libraries is a non-profit organisation that has its founding values and objectives imbued with the total emancipation of South African youth in inculcating a culture of reading amongst communities in South Africa, particularly the black youth to build an inclusive growth in the country.

The organisations aims to promote African literature as it acknowledges that African stories are worth telling. Furthermore, the focus on AFRICAN LITERATURE is premised on the fact that the organisation wants to promote African literature as it does not share the same prestige as other literature even in the African continent.

2.Vision

  • To establish school library centres that promote afro-centric patriotic literature.

  • To enhance the learners reading ability and to instill a consistent reading culture

  • To see every public ordinary school from quintile 1- quintile 3 in South Africa, having a functioning library with adequate effective literacy and mathematical context.

  • To provide consultative support for the effective functioning of community libraries

3.Mission

  • To assist the primary ordinary schools to establish a functional library, which contains 70% African literature in order to stimulate indigenous knowledge systems (storytelling).

  • To assist schools to re-introduce library periods within the curriculum timetable so as to capacitate learners from early childhood development to become critical thinkers.

  • To introduce literacy programmes such as Spelling Bee, Writing competition etc

To establish programmes that enhance reading in the communities
